The Prize
In endowing the Heinrich Wieland Prize, Boehringer Ingelheim demonstrates its commitment to promoting research on lipids and other biologically active substances in the areas of chemistry, biochemistry, physiology and clinical medicine.
The first prize was given in 1964 to Professor Ernst Klenk in honour of his lifetime achievement. In 2008, the fourth "Medal in Gold" for lifetime achievement was presented to Professor Nepomuk Zöllner from Germany.
The prize is named after Professor Heinrich Wieland (1877 - 1957), a Nobel Prize Laureate in chemistry (1927) and a leading lipid chemist in the first half of the 20th century.
It also reflects the special relationship with Heinrich Wieland who was involved in the early stages of Boehringer Ingelheim's pharmaceutical research.
The Heinrich Wieland Prize is sponsored by Boehringer Ingelheim and awarded by a Board of Trustees.
